Sarcoids are one of the most common skin tumours affecting horses, donkeys and mules. They are caused by the bovine papillomavirus (BPV) and are considered benign but can be locally invasive. Sarcoids are commonly reported to multiply in number over the summer and grow in size over winter. Sarcoids appear as lumps, nodules, or ulcerated growths on the skin, often around the head, chest, abdomen, or legs which can cause the horse significant discomfort or disfigurement. Depending on their location, the sarcoids could interfere with tack, mobility or lead to secondary infections.
Treatment options vary and often include surgical removal, cryotherapy, topical medications or immunotherapy. However recurrence is common and no single treatment is universally effective.
One pony had developed a Sarcoid on the left side of his face last winter, and after hearing and seeing the results of other INDIBA practitioners across the country, it was decided to see the effects INDIBA Radiofrequency would have.
The result? Massively reduced sarcoid size and appearance, to the point where it has gone! And so far, it hasn’t recurred in the same place and no others have been spotted appearing on other parts of his body!
